IKGA Asia Bloc Technical Seminar 2023 Tokyo, Japan

The IKGA Asian Bloc Technical Seminar 2023 Tokyo, Japan was held from December 11 to 13, 2023.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seminar events have been postponed in recent years, but a technical seminar in Japan was organized once again to strengthen the unity within the Asian Bloc.

The seminar was conducted with the following instructors: President of IKGA, Grandmaster Goshi Yamaguchi, IKGA Asian Block Director, Gohei Yamaguchi Shihan IKGA Asian Block Vice Director, Hideki Wakasugi Shihan IKGA Secretary General, Shin Tsuki Shihan, supported by instructors from the Japan Karatedo Goju-kai Association (JKGA), including Yaco Minaar Shihan, Aikihiro Saito Shihan and Takashi Tsuchiya Shihan, the Secretary General.

This year’s Asian Block Seminar included seminars for practitioners with ranks and instructors, hosting participants from over 10 countries, totaling over 60 attendees.

The seminar covered rigorous training in line with IKGA regulations, including basic exercises, kata training, pre-arranged sparring, and kata bunkai kumite. Moreover, new training methods such as 'Ken-shu' (fist guarding), 'Sho-shu' (palm guarding), and 'Ryo-shu' (defensive posture) were introduced by Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi. The seminar provided an opportunity for Asian Bloc members to interact after a considerable period, resulting in a vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the participating countries for their attendance and support as host countries. Additionally, we extend our sincere thanks to the staff of the JKGA and all the instructors and Shihans who participated in the seminar.

2023 Australian Seminar and 60th Anniversary celebrations

Hello to our distinguished guests, Australian Shihans, Sensei, Sempai and students,

The 3 day NSW leg of our famous Grand Master’s tour of Australia has been successfully completed.

Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi Hanshi is a renowned modern day Karate Master. He is the leader of our International Karate-do Goju Kai Association (IKGA) and the Number One Master of our style.

The seminar training was amazing, our master brings a breath of fresh air and vitality each time he teaches his dynamic Karate-do! He has the ability to have all present engaged and learning to increase their potential.

Saiko Shihan brought two assistant Instructors with him from his Japan Headquarters (the Hombu Dojo).

His son Gohei Yamaguchi Shihan, is a very talented Master who is obviously following in his father’s footsteps.

Also assisting was Jaco Minnaar Shihan, a South African Master who is living and training in Japan, at the Hombu Dojo.

Brian Mackie Hanshi is our Australian Director and Chief Instructor, he has capably organized and coordinated the events. Brian Hanshi travelled over from Perth for the NSW seminar and celebrations, before returning home to conduct the second leg of the Australian seminars there. At present the Perth Seminar participants are enjoying Saiko Shihan’s wonderful training.

Sydney’s Paul Starling Hanshi is a member of the IKGA Presidents Council. In his role as an IKGA Vice President, Paul Hanshi attended the 60th anniversary celebration Wednesday evening and put his watchful eye over the training Thursday morning.

We had members travel from Japan, New Zealand, Western Australia, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, to join the NSW members. All feedback has been positive following these events on the Central Coast of NSW.

I humbly thank all the IKGA members and their families, who travelled from overseas, around Australia and all over NSW to join Saiko Shihan at this historical gathering for IKGA Australia.

Worth a mention is the huge effort in organizing this NSW event by the Sydney Goju Kai committee, and particularly their President Mark Burton Shihan.

The Australian Masters who came to assist with teaching and to continue their learning were: Iwan Pranatio Shihan from Victoria, Tom Curtis Shihan and Alvaro Martos Shihan from Queensland, Lindsay Johnston Shihan from New Zealand and Basil Gotsis Shihan from Western Australia. We thank you all.

A huge thank you to Saiko Shihan and all the Master Instructors, who continually give their time, knowledge and experience! We all greatly benefit from these lessons, in our lives.

Finally I would like to focus on Gohei Yamaguchi Shihan’s speech, in closing our 60th anniversary function. He had all present clap together with only one finger (one finger each hand), then with two fingers, then three, four and finally all five fingers on both hands. The effect was that the sound went from feint to becoming louder and finally a very large, appreciable applause. The idea was that with just a few, little could be achieved. The more that joined in, the louder and more formidable the achievement became. Finally when everyone joined together, the sound was very loud and impressive. Proving that when we all work together in unity, we can achieve amazing things…

I look forward to working together in unity with you all, in the future.

Kind regards,

Rick Burton Shihan

IKGA NSW Director

IKGA South American Championships and Seminar

On October 8th and 9th, 2022, 140 members of the IKGA South American Block met in Argentina for both the IKGA South American Championships and the South American Block Seminar and rank examinations. The event was hosted by Argentina under Kyoshi Andrés Ávila, with participating delegations from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

The South American Championships were held on Saturday, October 8, followed by rank examinations on Sunday, October 9. The examination panel was comprised with Kyoshi Andres Avila, Kyoshi Carlos Gonzalez and Hanshi Gonzalo Ramirez.

The South American seminar was also held on October 9, and was held in 3 parts. Part one was taught by Kyoshi Carlos Gonzalez, part two was taught by Hanshi Gonzalo Ramirez and part three was a virtual seminar taught by Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi, and assisted by Gohei Yamaguchi Shihan.

This event was the first reunion of the South American Block after the suspension of activities imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The joy of participating and sharing experiences again was enormous. The finishing touch was, as expected, the masterful seminar given by our Saiko Shihan with the assistance of Gohei Shihan.

Members of the South American Block were also able to conduct other business of the Block, including planning future events.

First IKGA North American Block Online Seminar, October 8, 2022

On October 8, 2022 IKGA North America was proud to host an online seminar. After over two years of being locked down, we were fortunate to have Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi teach a comprehensive online class for brown and black belt members. He was assisted by Asian Block President Gohei Yamaguchi Shihan and Brent Regan Shihan. 64 members from IKGA Canada and USA affiliated dojos participated in the seminar.

The seminar covered basic techniques including Tachi, Uke, Tsuki and Keri, as well as introducing the new Kata Kenshu and Shoshu. It was just over 2 hours in length and was packed with new information, in addition to being a great review for everyone to take away and practice.

The general seminar was followed immediately by a class for Shihans, which included the new kata Ryoshu, and Tokuteikata Genkaku and Chikaku. Saiko Shihan also took some time to teach theory behind the four Tokuteikata. Although our time together online was short, this was a fantastic training opportunity and a great chance for the Shihans of North America to brush up on their knowledge.

It has been too long since we have been able to get together. Thank you to Saiko Shihan for offering to lead this online seminar, and also a big thank you to all the participating Dojos, Instructors and members. While we weren’t able to meet and train together in person, this was a fantastic opportunity to get together online and share some time together. Being able to practice together again, even online, was fun, challenging and re-invigorating. Let's start looking ahead to our next chance to get together!

First IKGA Asian Bloc online Seminar for Instructors and Shihan - 2021

On December 26, 2021, the 1st IKGA Asia Block Online Instructor and Shihan Seminar was held.

This was the first time to hold the Asia Block Seminar online, which previously had been postponed due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All Japan Karatedo Gojukai / International Karatedo Gojukai Chairman Goshi Yamaguchi Saiko Shihan, IKGA Asia Block Chief Gohei Yamaguchi Shihan, and IKGA Asia Deputy Block Chief Hideki Wakasugi Shihan all participated in the seminar as presenters and lecturers.

This year's Asia Block Online Seminar included a Shihan seminar and an Instructors' seminar for 3rd dan and above. A total of 17 countries with more than 100 members participated.

Since the training was conducted online, kumite technique with minimal movement as well as basic training (Kihon) were the focus for the Instructor seminar, as well as the new training kata Sanshu. Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi led Kenshu and Shoshu practice.

In the Shihan seminar, following Kenshu and Shoshu, practice then led to Ryoshu and Shihan Kata (Tokuteigata). It was a lively seminar full of ideas that could not be exchanged for two years.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Secretariat of the All Japan Karatedo Gojukai for their cooperation in holding the seminar, and to all the leaders and instructors who participated in this online seminar.

Message to IKGA members from Paul Starling Hanshi

Fighting against this hidden enemy COVID-19.

To my fellow IKGA Members ... Greetings from Sydney Australia.

During the past few days, I have received and read very inspirational messages from our IKGA President Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi and also another from IKGA Vice President Ingo De Jong Hanshi, with regards to these troubling times of Coronavirus.

Although restrictions vary from Country to Country and seem to be gradually easing up, we must all still remain on the alert to safeguard ourselves and our families from this dreadful Pandemic.

SELF DEFENSE is not only guarding against a human attacker or aggressor, but how we all face life and the daily challenges around us.

Self Defence is actually looking after our bodies, our health (both physical and mental), and anything that can be of danger to our well being.

Self Defense begins with AWARENESS.

We alone are responsible for our own well being, and we must be prepared to face any challenge that comes our way, and to be on the alert at all times.

With regards to COVID-19, of course part of our Self Defense routine should be keeping a safe distance from others, washing our hands regularly, wearing a face mask as required in many Countries, not shaking hands or hugging, not touching hard surfaces if we can help it in public places such as door handles, railings, lift buttons, keypads etc., and the list goes on. I am sure that you have all heard this advice many times by now.

This may well be the biggest challenge that many of us have faced in our lifetime.

I sincerely hope that your Karate training and spirit has better prepared you to face these challenges and push through to the other side of the Pandemic to come out stronger once that we can all resume training and to return to the Dojo.

You are all in my thoughts and in my prayers.

Below are a few words of encouragement, and perhaps a few ideas to help to motivate you to continue your Karate training at home or by yourself.
None of us know when we will be able to resume class training again, so in the meanwhile I have some suggestions for you.

Try to keep fit if you can, and also stay flexible.
Such exercises as pushups, situps, chinups, squats etc. will help.
Walking or jogging may be an option, but make sure that you stay a safe distance from other people. Keep an eye out for any changes in Government regulations in this regard.

If you have any weights or gym equipment, for the amount of time that you spend on strength building exercises, you should try to spend an equal amount of time on flexibility training and stretching, so that you don't tighten up.

Of course if you have a punching bag or a Makiwara (striking post) then this is good training, but if not, you can practise your speed and focus on a curtain or a towel or anything that you can hang up as a target (as long as there is nothing behind it that you can injure yourself on). You can also try focusing your strikes on sheets of newspaper and trying to split them.

Resistance training is also beneficial, such as using the rubber extensions for punching and kicking, or otherwise tying the rubbers to your Karate Obi (Belt) whilst you perform your movements etc.

So that you don't forget your patterns or sequences, you should just run through your Kata, your Bunkai (Kata Application) and your Yakusoku Kumite (Pre-Arranged Kumite) on your own, just so that when you eventually resume class training, you won't have forgotten it. You don't even need to do it hard and fast ... just any speed that you feel comfortable with.

Don't forget the 4 speeds of Kata Training - Go Ho, Ju Ho, Seido Ho, and Go Ju Ho. All are good and beneficial.

If your training space is restricted, try doing stationary Kata and also Sanchin and Tensho as often as you can. Also performing the Kata in your mind, is very good training.

If you have access to a full length mirror, it is good to perform your standing still basics in front of it, so that you can correct your own form. Or if you have enough room, you could also perform your basic movements.

There are plenty of training videos on the Internet if you can access YouTube and/or Facebook ... even from IKGA sources.

I have heard that there are many online Karate classes via ZOOM, and other social media forums. If you are an Instructor, just make sure before broadcasting such activities, that you have the approval and permission from your Dojo Head Instructor, your IKGA Country Branch Chief, and your IKGA Bloc Director.

Your own SELF TRAINING will help to keep you fit and healthy, and more able to ward off less serious forms of illness.

It is also good for your mind, and helps to prevent boredom from setting in if you are confined to home.

Try to set yourself an exercise program and stick to it.

It will help with self discipline and maintain a general feeling of well being.

Good luck with your home activities, stay safe and take care.

We all hope to see each other back in the Dojo when the various authorities give the all clear.

Best Wishes,

Paul Starling,
Club Patron - Goju Kai Karate Do Sydney Incorporated (Yamaguchi Goju Kai - Sydney Goju Kan),
IKGA Vice President,
Member of the IKGA Presidents Council (PC).

PANDEMIC

The human beings who inhabit this world are going through an unexpected and serious situation. Apparently it is known where and when this disaster began, but its end is uncertain. COVID 19 is cruelly striking some regions causing anguish and pain. And slowly but steadily it is invading our territories. Hopefully the wisdom of our governments, and mainly the intelligence, responsibility and solidarity of our peoples, will allow us to get out of this nightmare as soon as possible.

The South American Bloc of the International Karate Do Goju Kai Association remains attentive in the face of this new and changing situation. The authorities of each member country will adapt and regulate their activities according to the prevailing reality in their country. However, I think it is necessary to keep in mind today more than ever that those of us who carry karate-do in our souls, always have a Dojo under our feet for our practices, without the need to go anywhere.

Next October, the South American Bloc plans to celebrate an important event in the city of Mendoza, Argentina, with the presence of our Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi. And according to communications received, we will also be honored with the participation of members from North America. The continuous and unpredictable changes due to the current situation make it impossible for us to predict today, March 16, 2020, whether or not this event will occur. However, it is likely that within one month Kyoshi Shihan Andrés Avila Laurencio as Director of the Organizing Subsidiary – Argentina – along with the rest of the involved countries, Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi, and the undersigned will have more information to make the necessary decisions. And if before that time new developments arise either for or against, it will be resolved accordingly by notifying everyone immediately.

To finish, a personal request: to date, this virus has shown only one specific limitation: it is not possible for it to move by its own means. It needs us to transport it. Please, do not help it. If we isolate ourselves FOR THE GOOD OF ALL, it will die isolated.

PANDEMIA
